A HEROIC Horsham fireman is gearing up to join the international rescue mission following the disasterous eathquake that shook Haiti yesterday (Tuesday).
The giant quake - measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale - left the Caribbean Island devastated when it struck late yesterday and hundreds are thought to have lost their lives in the catastrophe.
Horsham firefighter Chris Kemp joined a team of West Su
ssex crew, all of whom are based at Horley fire station, to fly out and provide assistance to those struggling to deal with the scale of such a hit.
A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Spokesman said: "The Haiti Government has appealed for international help.
"The firefighters will be part of the UK government's response, and they should be joined by doctors and medical staff plus colleagues from six other fire and rescue services including Kent, West Midlands, Manchester, Lincolnshire, Lancashire and Leicestershire."
He added: "The team is equipped to respond to disasters at home or abroad such as hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and collapsed buildings.
"The TRU team was also sent to help the Indonesian earthquake in October."
The team are preparing to fly out from Gatwick, but are facing problems at home, with the airport cancelling many of its flights due to the snowy weather.
