PEOPLE living between Littlehampton and Worthing will have a clearer view from their windows thanks to the removal of eight electricity pylons.
EDF Energy Networks is dismantling a 1.2km section of pylons and power lines between Littlehampton and Worthing and replacing them with underground cables.
The £800,000 improvement project kicked off last week when the first of eight metal towers was removed from a playing field off Southfields Road, Littlehampton.
The towers being taken down are all on a route which runs across a residential area, including homes, playing fields, allotments and roads.
Barry Hatton, of EDF, said: "This project is a significant investment in electricity supplies for our customers in Worthing and Littlehampton. As a consequence we have been able to remove pylons which pass through a residential area.
"We are committed to providing a reliable electricity service to our customers and would emphasise that overhead power lines will always be an important part of the electricity distribution network. However, in this case, we did not need to retain our overhead network and we are pleased this project can also enhance the local area."
The eight pylons are made up of two off Southfields Road, Littlehampton, one on a roundabout in Esmonde Close, Littlehampton and one in an area of disused land next to Timberleys housing estate, Littlehampton.
The fifth pylon is in a private garden off Melrose Avenue, Worthing. The next two pylons are in allotments where the route crosses Lincett Drive and the eighth is in the garden of a house in Canterbury Road, Worthing. The work is expected to be completed by March 6.
