CRAWLEY Town Supporters Club chairman Steve Leake has asked fans to be patient before criticising manager Steve Evans after several poor results and the sale of key players from the club.
In a letter to the Crawley Observer sportsdesk, he urges caution to those who want Evans to leave the club and calls for stayaway sports enthusiasts to get down to Broadfield Stadium to support the team.
This is in response to fans who are angry over yesterday's double disappointment of the sale of topscorer Jamie Cook to Oxford Utd and the demoralising 3-0 defeat last night at Luton Town.
Ten days ago the Reds also lost 4-1 at home to Blue Square Premier newcomers Gateshead.
Dear Sports Editor,
I'm disappointed Jamie Cook's gone but I understand his reason for going – to go back to his hometown club.
I wish him all the best and hope he does well except when he plays us!
Without Jamie we do now look a bit lightweight upfront except for Jefferson Louis.
It is a bit worrying because the loan players we have brought in are defensive and it is not clear who we can expect to score goals.
For those who are complaining that we are selling key players - you have to take into account the gates we are getting of only 800 people – you have to cut your cloth to suit your budget.
It is time more apathetic sports fans in Crawley got off their backsides and got behind the club instead of staying away and then perhaps we would be buying players rather than selling.
The Luton result was not as bad as it seemed because at the beginning of the season I would have expected to lose against them.
I'm more disappointed about losing heavily to Gateshead which was a bitter blow.
I would urge fans to wait until Steve Evans has all his players recovered from injury before calling for him to leave.
The 'Evans Out' campaign should take into consideration that last night (at Luton) there were three players who had only just signed and did not know the rest of the team.
You can't expect them to gel straight away and this view is a bit impatient.
There may be a time when Steve Evans feels he's had enough, but let's get things into perspective before condemning him.
We lost to a very strong team at Mansfield, then beat Wrexham at home and Cambridge Utd away. It's only been the injuries which have caused the latest poor results.
Karl Broadhurst looks a good replacement for Jake Wright but he hasn't had a consistent partner. When Adam Quinn comes back things may settle down and we won't concede so many goals.
At the moment this is not the team that Steve Evans would pick as his first choice - we must wait until he's got 18 fit players before we make any judgements.
