For six weeks over the summer, Singleton Village Hall Committee dished up Ploughman's lunches and cream teas to hungry visitors in a bid to boost funds.

To publicise the event on Sundays in the village hall, the committee produced around six signs and placed them on the A286 at the southern and northern ends of the village.

But they were aghast to find them missing as the initiative neared its end.

Sarah Casdagli (55) said: "The first we knew of it was when my husband Ion and I were out on the A286 and saw they had gone. We were extremely angry. A local resident told us she had seen the council remove them at 6.30am. It just seems so petty to say nothing of the waste of council workers working time."

The hand-made notices were produced with a mixture of bought and donated materials.

This, coupled with publicity through the Observer, saw people flock to enjoy the delicious refreshments, raising more than £500 in the first five weeks to go towards refurbishing the hall toilets.

Mrs Casdagli said: "We are being encouraged on one hand to improve and maintain village amenities and then slapped down by the other."

At the time of going to press no-one from Chichester District Council was available to comment.
