INJURED against France, he was the first-choice England striker who went on to see his replacement score a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final.
But he still remains etched in everyone's memory as one of the nation's most sublime goal-scorers ever.

He played 57 times in England and hit the back of the net 44 times, five fewer than Bobby Charlton but at a much higher rate – enough to leave him third in the all-time list of England goalscorers behind Charlton and Gary Lineker.

No one has scored more hat-tricks for England – an astonishing six. And in the 1961 British Home Championship, he scored seven goals in three games for England – no more than you'd expect from the man who in 1960 became the youngest-ever player to score 100 league goals in English football at the age of 20 years 290 days.
